Shooting Once for Both Vertical and Horizontal
Reels need 9:16, portals and YouTube need 16:9. How to shoot a single walkthrough that survives both crops.
Every property needs two videos in different shapes, and almost nobody has time to shoot twice. The answer is not compromise — it is framing the original shoot so that both crops were always available.
Why one shoot has to serve both
Reels, Shorts and WhatsApp status all want 9:16. Portal listings, YouTube and anything a client watches on a laptop want 16:9. Choosing one means abandoning half your distribution.
Shoot 4K horizontal and crop down to vertical in the edit. You are discarding resolution you were never going to display, and you get a second format for nothing.
The alternative — shooting vertical and adding blurred bars for horizontal — looks like what it is. It is acceptable for a story, never for a listing.
Frame with a centre column in mind. Everything that matters must sit inside the middle 56% of the horizontal frame, because that is precisely what survives a 9:16 crop.
Framing for the crop
Keep text and captions out of the top and bottom 15%. Instagram places its own interface there and will cover whatever you wrote, on every phone.
Pans are the enemy of dual-format. A horizontal sweep that reads elegantly at 16:9 becomes a lurch once cropped, because the same angular movement now crosses a much narrower frame. Walk forward instead of sweeping sideways.
Shoot the hero shot twice, once in each orientation, if it is the frame carrying the whole post. Everything else can be cropped without thinking about it.
Stabilisation eats edges. If your phone or editor stabilises in post, it crops in slightly to do it, so leave a little more room than the frame appears to need.
Export and delivery
Export vertical first. It is the format most people will see, and it is the one where mistakes are most visible.
Name the exports properly — flat-name-vertical, flat-name-horizontal. Sending a client the wrong aspect ratio is a small error that reads as carelessness.
Check the vertical crop on an actual phone before publishing. What looks centred on a laptop preview is frequently not, and the error is always in the same direction: your subject has drifted left.

Is it better to shoot vertical natively?
For reels-only content, marginally yes. But most agents also need a horizontal version for portals and YouTube, and reshooting costs far more than cropping.
What resolution should I shoot at?
4K where your phone allows it and storage permits. The extra pixels are what make cropping and stabilising free rather than destructive.
Can I just let the platform crop it automatically?
No. Automatic crops centre on the frame, not on the subject, and property footage rarely has its subject dead centre.
